Versailles, November 17, 2015 — four days after the Paris attacks. The palace stood nearly empty, stripped of its usual thousands of tourists, returned briefly to its original silence.

The underside of a winter canopy, photographed straight up in the deserted gardens: bare branches spread like a nervous system, a circulatory map, a thing that breathes without air. The sky is the floor. The trees hold everything. On that particular day, they held the silence of an entire city.

Photographed on location at the Gardens of Versailles, France.
