Versailles, November 17, 2015 — four days after the Paris attacks. The palace stood nearly empty, stripped of the crowds that usually fill its forecourt, returned briefly to the silence it was built to command.

A handful of figures cross the vast grey expanse, dwarfed by a façade made to be seen by thousands. No procession, no spectacle — only the building and its own enormous quiet. On that day, grandeur kept its own company.

Photographed on location at the Palace of Versailles, France.
