Versailles, November 17, 2015 — four days after the Paris attacks. The palace stood nearly empty, stripped of its usual crowds, returned briefly to its original silence. A baroque fountain sits frozen in winter, stripped bare of grandeur. Above it, illustrated blue raindrops fall from a single cartoon cloud — the only color in the frame, the only softness left. History needs a little help crying.
